What Would Happen?
Ask kids to imagine:
Imagine that they are the parents and the parents are the kids. The parents tell the kids to clean their room before lunch on Saturday. One child cleans his room but the other one goofs off and says, "I won't do it."
What would be the wisest thing for you as a parent to do? (To punish the one who disobeyed, to correct him, to reward the one who finished his work, etc.)
What would happen if you rewarded both? (The one who worked hard will give up trying, the disobedient one will not learn that it pays to obey, etc.)
What would happen if you punished both? (The one who cleaned his room will be upset, both will learn that it doesn't matter if they obey or not, etc.)
If we have been given instructions on what to do, it is only right to expect a punishment if we neglect to do it. On the other hand, if we have been diligent to complete the work, we should be rewarded. God will someday punish those who do wrong and reward those who have diligently served Him.
Our Reward
Items needed: slips of paper (one for each person), a bag to hold the slips, and small treats (cookies, toys, candy, gum, stickers, etc.)
Write a simple chore to be done on each slip of paper and put them in a bag. Let each family member choose a slip from the bag. Announce that there will be a reward if the chore is done by a certain time. (Don't remind or nag them.) At the appointed time, see if each one did his or her chore. If they have, give them a small reward.
Read Matthew 16:27
Jesus said that when He returns, He would reward every man according to his works.
Serving God. Serving Others.
Jesus told His followers that the way to serve Him is to serve others.
(Matthew 25:34-45). Doing good works is not the way to be right with God, but we should do good works after we become a Christ follower (Ephesians 2:8-10).
Brainstorm ways to serve others this week.
Some ideas to get you started:
- Fill plastic bags with items the homeless might need. Put in car and give them out when opportunity comes.
- Go to a food pantry and help sort the food.
- Pick up trash at a neighborhood park.
- Make cards and give them out at a nursing home.
- Donate good, used toys to the Salvation Army.
- Do yard work for the elderly or handicapped.
- Make appreciation cards and take them to the fire or police station.
- Plant flowers at the church or for an elderly person.
- Make and serve a meal to someone sick or in need of encouragement.
