Showing Compassion
Jesus showed compassion when He wept over the people in Jerusalem because they would not listen to or come to Him.
Ask:
What is compassion? (Compassion is feeling badly when others hurt and wanting to help them.)
Look through the newspaper together and find examples of people who need compassion. Read each example aloud and say a prayer for each one after dinner.
Compassion in Action
Modeling compassion is the best way to teach it.
Brainstorm names of people you know who need compassion (an elderly neighbor, a church member who can no longer attend services, someone recovering from an illness, a friend going through a difficult time, etc).
Plan a way to help them this week. Let the kids make a card. Take a meal or some fruit, bake some cookies, and go visit. Don’t forget to share a Bible verse and say a prayer with them, also.
Serve with Gladness
Memorize Psalm 100:2 (Serve the Lord with gladness. Come before His presence with singing.)
Make up a tune (or use a familiar one like “Are You Sleeping”) and sing the verse (add last week’s verse to it, if you like).
For more practice in learning the verse, let one child be the “guesser” and turn the child’s back to the printed copy of the psalm. Let another child point to a word that everyone will skip (make a buzzing noise instead of saying the word) when you say the verse together. See if the “guesser” can guess which word you didn’t say.
